Eniluracil, an oral dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) inhibitor, was previously under development by GlaxoSmithKline for oncology indications. Adherex is developing eniluracil to improve the therapeutic value and effectiveness of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), one of the most widely used oncology drugs in the world. ADH-1, our lead biotechnology compound, selectively targets N-cadherin, a protein present on certain tumor cells and the established blood vessels of solid tumors. STS is a chemoprotectant being developed to reduce the disabling hearing loss that can often result from treatment with platinum-based chemotherapy drugs.
Adherex also has a rich preclinical portfolio based on our proprietary cadherin platform. This pipeline includes peptides and small chemical molecule successors to ADH-1; peptides and small molecules targeted to inhibiting the metastatic spread of some cancers; and peptides that combine both angiolytic and antiangiogenic properties.
